De behandeling van spanningshoofdpijn

Samenvatting

Spanningshoofdpijn komt veel voor en blijft vaak langdurig recidiveren. De meeste patiënten zoeken geen medische hulp, veel mensen herkennen zelf een relatie met werkhouding of overbelasting. Echter, ook veel mensen slikken langdurig vrij verkrijgbare pijnstillers, hetgeen kan leiden tot medicatieafhankelijke hoofdpijn. Bij chronische spanningshoofdpijn zijn tricyclische antidepressiva en cognitieve therapie ongeveer even effectief, beide halveren de ernst en frequentie van de hoofdpijn. Over fysiotherapie en manuele therapie is onvoldoende kwalitatief goed onderzoek beschikbaar om een uitspraak over mogelijk effect te kunnen doen. Acupunctuur lijkt niet effectief te zijn.
