18. Cannabisgebruik en mondgezondheid

Inleiding

Cannabis is een drug afkomstig van een plant met de Latijnse naam ‘Cannabis sativa’ en wordt wereldwijd gebruikt. De plant wordt al verbouwd sinds het begin van de beschaving, in eerste instantie als vezeldraad voor de productie van kleding en touw (Iversen, 2000). Door geografische en klimatologische factoren veranderde het farmacologisch actieve bestanddeel dusdanig dat, alleen in bepaalde regio’s waar dit bestanddeel hoog genoeg was, de medicinale werking van de plant werd ontdekt. Tot 500 na Christus werd cannabis als bewustzijnsveranderend middel alleen in India gebruikt. Pas aan het eind van de achttiende eeuw werd de Indiase hennep met roesverwekkende en narcotische eigenschappen in Europa geïntroduceerd. Door de toenemende belangstelling voor deze bijzondere eigenschappen werd cannabis veelvuldig onderzocht en aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw werd het voor talloze aandoeningen gebruikt (Kalant, 2001). In de twintigste eeuw is er een toename in het gebruik van cannabis met name voor recreatief en religieus gebruik (Ashton, 2001).
