24. Cachexie

Samenvatting

Cachexie is een term die gebruikt wordt voor ziektegerelateerd spierverlies. Van oudsher wordt de term gebruikt om patiënten te beschrijven die zeer mager zijn en door de ziekte vele kilo’s zijn afgevallen. De term cachexie komt van het Griekse ‘kakos’ en ‘hexis’, die gecombineerd ‘slechte toestand’ betekenen. De huidige definitie richt zich meer op het spierverlies in combinatie met gewichtsverlies in de loop van enkele maanden. In dit hoofdstuk wordt ingegaan op de diagnostiek van cachexie en het belang van zo vroeg mogelijk starten met de behandeling ervan.
