Samenvatting

De afgelopen jaren groeit nationaal en internationaal de aandacht voor het belang van het adequaat behandelen van psychiatrische stoornissen bij patiënten met een laag IQ. Behandelaren maken zich sterk om evidence based-behandelprotocollen geschikt te maken voor zwakbegaafde patiënten. Er is immers geen grond voor de gedachte dat psychiatrische stoornissen bij deze patiëntengroep niet behandelbaar zouden zijn. Wel zijn aanpassingen noodzakelijk, onder andere in de manier waarop behandelingen worden uitgevoerd. We spreken ook hier bij voorkeur van geprotocolleerd maatwerk. In dit hoofdstuk ligt het accent op de psychotherapeutische behandeling bij patiënten met een laag IQ, maar we besteden uiteraard ook aandacht aan farmacotherapie.
