Samenvatting

Door de gunstige effecten van alcohol op hart- en vaatziekten is de belangstelling voor alcohol als veroorzaker van levercirrose en levercarcinoom wat op de achtergrond geraakt. Toch is alcohol de meest voorkomende oorzaak van levercirrose. Tevens speelt alcoholmisbruik een belangrijke rol bij pancreatitis, neuropsychiatrische stoornissen, kanker van de slokdarm, mond-keelholte en borst, en bij verkeersongelukken en geweldsmisdrijven.
