Samenvatting

Overgewicht is een te hoog lichaamsgewicht in relatie tot de lengte en (bij kinderen) de leeftijd. Obesitas of adipositas refereert specifiek aan een absolute of relatieve overmaat aan vetweefsel. Overgewicht en obesitas worden uitgedrukt in de ’body mass index’ (BMI), vroeger ook wel ’Quetelet-index’ (QI) genoemd. Deze wordt bepaald door het lichaamsgewicht (kg) te delen door het kwadraat van de lengte in meters.
