Samenvatting

De term ʻshin splintsʼ werd lange tijd gebruikt voor iedere vorm van pijn aan de schenen die ontstaat na inspanning, waarbij compartimentsyndromen en stressfracturen volgens sommigen wel, en volgens anderen niet hieronder vielen.[1,3] Tegenwoordig wordt ʻshin splintsʼ gezien als de lekenterm voor wat (para)medici mediaal tibiaal stresssyndroom De term mediaal tibiaal stresssyndroom is afgeleid van de Engelse term ʻMedial Tibial Stress Syndromeʼ. (MTSS) noemen.[4] Hoewel de pathofysiologie van MTSS nog niet duidelijk is, bestaat er wel overeenstemming over wat MTSS inhoudt, en worden compartimentsyndromen en stressfracturen door deze diagnose uitgesloten.
