17 Verstandelijke beperkingen, gezondheid, bewegen en cognitie

Samenvatting

» Veelvoorkomende problemen bij mensen met een verstandelijke beperking, zoals overgewicht en het syndroom van Down, en de relatie tussen bewegen en cognitie, blijken bijna onuitputtelijke bronnen van inspiratie te zijn voor beschouwing, onderzoek en zorgverbetering. Dat komt mede door de specifieke gezondheidsrisico’s die zich hierbij kunnen voordoen, en de rol die bewegen daarbij speelt. De ontwikkelingsleeftijd en de ondersteuningsbehoefte worden beschouwd als belangrijkste criteria om te weten wanneer er sprake is van een verstandelijke beperking. Overgewicht kan het beste te lijf worden gegaan met multicomponentinterventies, waarin beweging, voeding, kennis en sociale ondersteuning zijn opgenomen. Een nieuw inzicht hierbij is dat manipulatie van een relatief simpele factor in de voedingsomgeving, zoals het veranderen van de vorm van een drinkglas, een significante invloed heeft op de hoeveelheid drinken. Ten slotte wordt aandacht besteed aan het feit dat bewegingsafhankelijke cognitieve verbetering vrij robuust is over de verschillende intelligentieniveaus en mate van ontwikkeling van het brein. Vandaar ook de verwachting dat personen met een verstandelijke beperking van deze nieuwe inzichten kunnen profiteren.

Ondermeer in overheidscommunicatie wordt de term ‘verstandelijk gehandicapt’ nogal eens gebruikt om de doelgroep aan te duiden. Internationaal is echter overeengekomen om hiervoor de term intellectual disability te reserveren, waarvan ‘verstandelijke beperking’ een correcte vertaling is.
