Samenvatting

De rechterventrikel heeft binnen de cardiologie en de echocardiografie langdurig veel minder aandacht gekregen dan de linkerventrikel. Lang bestond de opvatting dat de RV een weinig actieve bijdrage levert aan de cardiac output en dat de RV-functie vooral afhankelijk is van een goede LV-functie. De RV stond ook minder in de belangstelling doordat deze zich minder gemakkelijk laat onderzoeken dan de LV: de vorm van de RV laat geen eenvoudige wiskundige modellen toe om het volume te berekenen en door de ligging van de RV achter het sternum is echografische afbeelding van de RV minder eenvoudig dan van de LV.
