Voeding bij kinderen met diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Bij kinderen komt behalve diabetes mellitus type 1, waarbij er een tekort aan insuline bestaat door destructie van de insulineproducerende cellen in de pancreas, ook steeds vaker diabetes mellitus type 2 voor als gevolg van de toename van het percentage kinderen met overgewicht. Bij diabetes type 1 bestaat de behandeling uit het toedienen van insuline. Een strikte glucoseregulatie is belangrijk voor een goede kwaliteit van leven maar ook ter voorkoming van complicaties op de lange termijn. Door de insulinepomp is er meer flexibiliteit mogelijk, wat de kwaliteit van leven van het kind met diabetes type 1 sterk heeft verbeterd. Bij diabetes type 2 zal de aandacht vooral gericht zijn op educatie van het hele gezin over verandering van leefstijl, vooral gericht op gezonde voeding en meer beweging.
