Samenvatting

Presbyacusis of ouderdomsslechthorendheid is een normaal verouderingsverschijnsel, waarbij het gehoor geleidelijk vermindert. Het is een langzaam progressieve vorm van perceptief gehoorverlies aan beide oren tegelijk, dat niet door andere oorzaken kan worden verklaard dan door fysiologische veroudering van het hoorzintuig. Hierbij kan ook oorsuizen optreden. Harde geluiden ervaart de patiënt vaak als hinderlijk (‘recruitment’). Ook het richtinghoren kan gestoord zijn, waardoor het verstaan van spraak in een lawaaiige omgeving moeilijker wordt.
