Abstract

Preventie en behandeling van aandoeningen die het gevolg zijn van atherosclerose liggen in elkaars verlengde: het onderscheid tussen primaire en secundaire preventie van cardiovasculaire aandoeningen is door voortschrijdend inzicht in de vaatwandbiologie en pathogenese van atherosclerose kunstmatig gebleken. Een 50-jarige man met een combinatie van risicofactoren zoals diabetes, hypertensie en roken en zonder manifest vaatlijden kan een hoger risico hebben op het krijgen van een myocardinfarct in de komende tien jaar dan een man met een oud onderwandinfarct zonder deze risicofactoren. Beiden vallen wel in de hoogrisicocategorie.
