Abstract

Parenterale voeding is geïndiceerd voor patiënten die niet in staat zijn via de enterale weg (oraal of door de sonde) voldoende voedingsstoffen op te nemen. De risico’s en complicaties van parenterale voeding zijn ernstig en deze wordt daarom alleen geadviseerd wanneer er drie dagen of langer, parenteraal (bij)gevoed kan worden. Dit hoofdstuk beschrijft de indicaties voor parenterale voeding, de mogelijke toedieningswegen, samenstelling en complicaties. Behandeling van een patiënt met parenterale voeding gebeurt bij voorkeur door een gespecialiseerd voedingsteam. Regelmatige evaluatie van bloedwaarden en gewicht kan ervoor zorgen dat de voorgeschreven voeding optimaal wordt toegepast. Is het niet mogelijk tijdens de opname de voeding via de enterale weg te hervatten, dan kan de parenterale voeding ook thuis worden gecontinueerd.
