Abstract

In dit hoofdstuk wordt besproken welke voedingsfactoren van betekenis zijn bij de preventie en behandeling van osteoporose. Osteoporose is een ziekte die vooral bij de oudere mens voorkomt, in het bijzonder bij vrouwen na de menopauze. De ziekte gaat gepaard met een verminderde botmassa en een daardoor sterk verhoogde kans op fracturen van met name de heup, wervellichamen en de pols. Erfelijke factoren spelen een belangrijke rol bij het ontstaan van de ziekte. Door een gezonde leefstijl met voldoende beweging en adequate voeding kan de kans op het krijgen van osteoporose worden verkleind en kan medicamenteuze behandeling van de ziekte worden ondersteund. Een adequate inname van calcium en een voldoende voorziening met vitamine D zijn de belangrijkste voedingsfactoren bij preventie en behandeling van osteoporose. Primaire preventie is gericht op het bereiken van de zogenaamde piekbotmassa op jongvolwassen leeftijd en op het verminderen van het verlies van botmassa in het latere leven.
