Inleiding

Het woord monitoring is afgeleid van het Latijnse werkwoord monére, dat letterlijk ‘waarschuwen, vermanen’ betekent en in overdrachtelijke zin ‘letten op … met een speciaal doel’. Hieruit zou men kunnen afleiden dat monitoringapparatuur op een patiënt let; niets is minder waar!
