Inleiding
In 1848, jaren voordat lokale anesthesie praktisch mogelijk was, beschreef Simpson de potentiële voordelen van lokale anesthesie boven die van de algehele anesthesie met ether en chloroform: ‘If we could by any means induce a local anesthesia without that temporary absence of consciousness, which is found in the state of general anesthesia, many would regard this a greater improvement.
