Overgewicht en obesitas in relatie tot ziekteverzuim

Een systematische literatuurstudie

Samenvatting

De kosten van de gezondheidszorg als gevolg van obesitas zijn geschat op 500 miljoen euro, terwijl de indirecte kosten, waaronder productiviteitsverlies, geschat zijn op het viervoudige: 2 miljard euro. Tot op heden zijn er echter nog geen systematische reviews verricht naar de relatie tussen overgewicht of obesitas met ziekteverzuim. Het doel van deze studie was het bestaan van een relatie van zowel overgewicht als obesitas met ziekteverzuim te onderzoeken, dit door middel van het op systematische wijze vergaren en beoordelen van literatuur. De zoekstrategie leverde uiteindelijk 21 geschikte publicaties op. Vanwege inconsistente resultaten tussen de studies is er geen bewijs gevonden voor een relatie tussen overgewicht en ziekteverzuim, noch tussen obesitas en ziekteverzuim. De consistente resultaten van een groot aantal case-control en cross-sectionele studies maken een relatie tussen obesitas en ziekteverzuim echter wel aannemelijk. De bedrijfsgezondheidszorg is een belangrijke speler in het verzuimbeleid van het bedrijf en zou zich kunnen richten op de preventie en behandeling van overgewicht.
