Samenvatting

Onder keelpijn wordt verstaan: klachten over pijn in de keel die acuut, chronisch of recidiverend kunnen zijn. Veelal is er sprake van een infectie van de bovenste luchtwegen, waarbij ook de keel betrokken is. Minder vaak is alleen de keel aangedaan. Dan wordt gesproken van keelontsteking of tonsillitis; in de Amerikaanse literatuur spreekt men van faryngitis.
