Acute hoest wordt meestal veroorzaakt door een bovensteluchtweginfectie, waarbij een antibioticum niet zinvol is.
Indien er geen oorzaak gevonden kan worden, spreekt men van aspecifieke hoest.
Alleen bij klachten van maagzuur of gastro-oesofageale reflux is een maagzuurremmer geïndiceerd.
Chronische, aspecifieke hoestklachten kunnen verbeteren met behulp van logopedie.
