Het voorschrijven van SSRI's aan minderjarigen: veilig of niet?

Kinderen en jongeren worden steeds vaker met psychofarmaca behandeld. Net als overige geneesmiddelen zijn deze doorgaans niet speciaal voor deze doelgroep op effectiviteit en veiligheid onderzocht. De laatste tijd zijn moderne antidepressiva (de zogenaamde SSRI's) in opspraak gekomen. Uit niet gepubliceerd onderzoek zou blijken dat SSRI's bij depressieve minderjarigen een verhoogde kans op zelfbeschadiging en suïcide geven. Dit heeft tot veel ongerustheid bij gebruikers en behandelaars geleid en aanleiding gegeven tot restrictieve maatregelen in het buitenland. Dit artikel gaat in op het volgende dilemma: er is weinig wetenschappelijk onderzoek om een goede effectiviteit/risicobalans op te maken voor de behandeling van depressies bij kinderen en jongeren met SSRI's. Deze vorm van behandeling wordt echter, mits zorgvuldig toegepast, in de praktijk waardevol geacht en de bijwerkingen, voor zo ver bekend, zijn overwegend relatief mild. Gepleit wordt voor grondig, systematisch onderzoek naar psychofarmacotherapie in het algemeen bij deze doelgroep.
