De oorzaak van hallux valgus is waarschijnlijk multifactorieel; soms komt de aandoening familiair voor.
Hallux valgus moet worden onderscheiden van hallux rigidus, waarbij dorsale flexie van de grote teen pijnlijk is.
Conservatieve maatregelen (goed schoeisel, voetoefeningen, steunzolen) zouden de progressie van de afwijking kunnen vertragen.
Alleen bij ernstige pijn of hinder is chirurgische interventie aangewezen.
