De impact van slechthorendheid op psychosociaal functioneren, werk en zorggebruik

Samenvatting

Slechthorendheid kan een grote impact hebben op iemands dagelijks leven, ook wanneer gehoorverlies op jongere leeftijd optreedt (< 65 jaar). Uit data van de Nationale Longitudinale Studie naar Horen (NL-SH) blijkt dat slechthorendheid vaak gerelateerd is aan minder goed psychosociaal functioneren. Zo rapporteerden deelnemers (18-70 jaar) met een slechtere score op de Nationale Hoortest hogere niveaus van stress, depressieve gevoelens, somatisatie en eenzaamheid. Belangrijk op te merken is dat deze uitkomsten verschilden per leeftijdsgroep. Daarnaast werd een grotere herstelbehoefte gevonden, wat aangeeft dat een werkende slechthorende vaker vermoeid is op en na het werk. De huisarts zou bij een klacht als vermoeidheid wellicht vaker kunnen denken aan een verminderde gehoorcapaciteit als onderliggende oorzaak. Het is voor een huisarts belangrijk om te weten dat zorg verlenen aan een slechthorende patiënt vaak meer is dan alleen het aanmeten van een hoortoestel.
