Samenvatting

Na aanvankelijke scepsis onderkennen steeds meer wetenschappers dat internettoepassingen als online-gamen, online-erotica of chatten tot compulsief gebruik kunnen leiden. Dit gedrag wordt gekenmerkt door onder andere preoccupatie en het verlies van controle over het internetgebruik en kan op termijn leiden tot psychosociale problemen, verlies van sociaal kapitaal en problemen met het functioneren op het werk of bij studie. De oorzaak kan voor een deel worden gevonden in het gemak waarmee mensen online een directe bevrediging kunnen vinden voor een grote variëteit aan behoeften. Hierdoor biedt het internet de mogelijkheid te vluchten voor de dagelijkse werkelijkheid in een betere, mooiere en veiliger wereld. De gevoeligheid voor het ontwikkelen van compulsief internetgebruik lijkt samen te hangen met een lage emotionele stabiliteit en een hoge mate van impulsiviteit. Hoewel slechts een klein deel van de internetgebruikers compulsief gedrag ontwikkelt, rechtvaardigen de mogelijk ernstige gevolgen op het gebied van werk, scholing en psychosociale ontwikkeling voor vooral jongeren meer aandacht voor dit nieuwe fenomeen.
