De meest voorkomende oorzaak van balanitis is een Candida-infectie. Diabetes mellitus en antibiotica verhogen het risico.
Frequent zeepgebruik kan recidiverende balanitis veroorzaken.
Overweeg de diagnose lichen sclerosus wanneer een balanitis wordt veroorzaakt door een verworven fimose.
Met tweemaal daags reinigen en applicatie van een lokaal antimycoticum geneest 90 % van de patiënten binnen een week.
