Adipositas bij kinderen

Abstract

Adipositas op de kinderleeftijd heeft ingrijpende psychosociale en somatische gevolgen. Onafhankelijk van het volwassen gewicht leidt adipositas in de adolescentie tot een toegenomen morbiditeit en mortaliteit aan coronaire hartziekten. Adipositas op de kinderleeftijd die op volwassen leeftijd blijft bestaan, is geassocieerd met een hogere morbiditeit.
Er bestaat geen algemeen geaccepteerde definitie voor adipositas op de kinderleeftijd. Hierdoor zijn er verschillende methoden in gebruik om adipositas bij kinderen vast te stellen en te kwantificeren. Gebruik van de Body Mass Index (bmi) of Quetelet-index (qi) wordt toenemend aanbevolen.
De laatste jaren is er sprake van een duidelijke toename van adipositas bij kinderen. Via een goede anamnese en volledig lichamelijk onderzoek komt men risicofactoren en eventueel al bestaande gevolgen van de adipositas op het spoor. Een multidisciplinaire behandeling waarin de ouders participeren biedt de meeste kans op blijvende gewichtsafname.
