Samenvatting

Het gebruik van ultrageluid voor het detecteren van objecten, het bepalen van de afstand tot een object en ook de (relatieve) snelheid ervan is niet beperkt tot echografie. De biologie kent dit allang uit de dierenwereld, bijvoorbeeld bij de dolfijn en de vleermuis die met behulp van ultrageluid hun omgeving verkennen. De wetenschap maakt al heel lang gebruik van ultrageluid, bijvoorbeeld voor het aftasten van de zeebodem omonder meer het profiel ervan in kaart te brengen.
