Samenvatting

Snurken kan worden gedefinieerd als geluidsproductie tijdens de slaap, die vooral ontstaat door vernauwing van de bovenste luchtwegen in het gebied van de farynx.1 Als snurken niet gepaard gaat met ademstilstanden of overmatige slaperigheid overdag, spreekt men van ‘primair of benigne snurken’.2 Bij gelijktijdige aanwezigheid van apneu én slaperigheid overdag spreekt men van het obstructieveslaapapneusyndroom (OSAS).1 Snurken leidt tot sociale ongemakken omdat de omgeving, en vooral de partner, er hinder van ondervindt. Ook kan chronisch snurken problemen doen ontstaan in werk en verkeer, door vermoeidheid en slaperigheid.3
