Samenvatting

Diverse vormen van pijn behoren tot de meestvoorkomende somatische klachten, zoals pijn in het bewegingsapparaat, hoofdpijn en buikpijn. Gelukkig zijn de pijnklachten niet voor iedereen even ernstig en ervaart slechts een beperkt percentage mensen beperkingen in het dagelijks leven. Bij een groep blijven de klachten aanhouden en bij een deel van de mensen met chronische pijn leiden de klachten tot beperkingen in het beroeps- en sociale leven. Vaak rapporteren zij emotionele, cognitieve en gedragsmatige problemen. Tot het klinische beeld behoren dan angst en depressie, gevoelens van irritatie, frustratie, hulpeloosheid en machteloosheid, overmatig medicatiegebruik, slechte nachtrust en een blijvende hulpvraag naar medische hulpverleners.
