Nursing research in primary care is set to expand following the launch of the UK’s first Primary Care Nursing Research Unit. The unit is formed from a collaboration of expertise from the Department of Primary Care and Population Sciences at University College London, the School of Nursing & Midwifery at King’s College London and two NHS partners: the North Central Thames Primary Care Research Network, and Camden & Islington NHS Trust. The new unit will enable the development of high-quality research into many aspects of nursing in primary care. Dr Toity Deave, research fellow at the Primary Care Nursing Research Unit, based at King’s College London, said: ‘This is a great new initiative that utilises the different talents of the four partners to create multidisciplinary primary care nursing research unit with close links to service providers. Our aim is very much to become a centre of excellence on primary care research. We anticipate that the unit’s research on the impact of nursing in promoting and maintaining health in primary care should influence health policy nationally as well as actual practice by primary care nurses. The unit will determine research priorities and gaps in primary care nursing research, in line with current policy recommendations and professional concerns.’
