Substance use is a known risk factor for suicide attempts and death from suicide. In the United States, suicide is a leading cause of death among individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs; Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration 2016). Between 43% and 65% of suicide attempts and completions are estimated to involve substance use (Steele et al. 2018). Internationally, SUDs are the second most common mental health disorder among suicide victims (Conner et al. 2014).
