Abstract
Zusammenfassung.Theoretischer Hintergrund: Familienstresstheorien lassen erwarten, dass die Auswirkungen krankheitspezifischer Stressoren auf die Familie durch individuelle Bewältigungskompetenzen der Mütter und durch die Funktionsfähigkeit der Familie moderiert werden. Fragestellung: Überprüft wurde der Beitrag des Schweregrades der Neurodermitis des Kindes, des krankheitsspezifischen Copings der Mütter und der Funktionsfähigkeit der Familie zur Vorhersage der Belastung von Müttern mit neurodermitiskranken Kindern. Methode: An einer Stichprobe von 45 Müttern mit neurodermitiskranken Kindern im Alter von 5 bis 82 Monaten wurde die mütterliche Belastung, das krankheitsspezifische Coping der Mütter sowie die familiäre Funktionsfähigkeit erfasst. Ergebnisse: Die mütterliche Belastung war unabhängig von objektiven Indikatoren des Schweregrades der Neurodermitis. Als bedeutsame Prädiktoren der mütterlichen Belastung erwiesen sich die von den Müttern wahrgenommenen krankheitsspezifischen Beeinträchtigungen des Kindes sowie das mütterliche Coping. Die familiäre Funktionsfähigkeit leistete darüber hinaus keinen signifikanten Beitrag zur Aufklärung der Varianz der mütterlichen Belastung. Schlussfolgerung: Die krankheitsspezifischen Bewältigungskompetenzen der Mütter haben Einfluss darauf, inwieweit die Anforderungen, die sich aus der Neurodermitis des Kindes ergeben, zur Belastung der Mütter führen. Die in unserer Studie erfassten familiären Funktionsbereiche beinhalten offenbar nicht die spezifischen Ressourcen für die Krankheitsverarbeitung in Familien mit neurodermitiskranken Kindern.
Abstract.Theoretical Background: In addition to a mother’s individual coping competencies, family functioning is an important resource when coping with children who are chronically ill. Objectives: We studied the impact of mothers’ illness-specific coping and family functioning on the stress perceived by mothers of children with atopic dermatitis. Methods: A questionnaire assessed maternal stress, mothers’ illness-specific coping, and family functioning in 45 mothers of children with atopic dermatitis (aged 5-82 months). Results: Maternal stress was independent of the objective severity of atopic dermatitis. Both the perceived illness-specific impairments of the child and maternal coping were significant predictors of maternal stress. However, family functioning made no further significant contribution to explaining the variance in maternal stress. Conclusions: A mother’s illness-specific coping competencies influence how far the demands arising from her child’s atopic dermatitis lead to maternal stress. The areas of family functioning assessed in this study possibly fail to tap the specific resources that impact on coping with illness in families of children with atopic dermatitis.
