Abstract
Abstract. Background: Therapists‘ prognosis of psychotherapy success shows low validity. Until now studies to explain this result were lacking. Objective: Does therapists‘ prognosis of success show low validity because it takes into account irrelevant subjective impressions? Methods: Correlations between therapists’ prognosis of success, their assessment of aspects of the psychotherapy process, and therapy outcome have been computed based on an unselected sample of 60 therapies. Results: The low validity of therapists’ prognosis of success was confirmed. It correlates best with therapists‘ impressions of the therapeutic relationship. In contrast to impressions of therapeutic progress, this variable does not correlate with therapy outcome. Conclusions: The validity of therapists‘ prognosis of success would probably improve if they took into account impressions of current therapy progress rather than impressions of the therapeutic relationship.
