Kernpunten

  • Een elektro encefalogram (EEG) met diffuse afwijkingen ondersteunt bij twijfel de diagnose ziekte van Alzheimer.
  • Als zowel de ziekte van Alzheimer, Lewy-body-dementie (DLB) als vasculaire dementie worden overwogen, zijn focale afwijkingen bij een diffuus vertraagd EEG een argument voor zowel DLB als vasculaire dementie.
  • Het voorkomen van periodieke ontladingen in het EEG is een van de diagnostische criteria voor de diagnose van de sporadische variant van de ziekte van Creutzfeldt- Jakob.
  • Epileptiforme afwijkingen in het EEG bij een patiënt met geheugenklachten kunnen een aanwijzing zijn voor ‘transient epileptic amnesia’. Een proefbehandeling met anti-epileptica dient te worden overwogen.
  • Wordt op klinische gronden een delier (toxisch metabole encefalopathie) verondersteld, dan kan het EEG van ondersteunende waarde zijn voor de diagnose.
