Meetinstrumenten betreffen screening en ernstbepaling, zelden het stellen van de diagnose.
De gestandaardiseerde MMSE is, ondanks zijn beperkingen, bruikbaar als screeningsinstrument.
Individuele behandelingen worden geëvalueerd met meetinstrumenten voor het globaal klinisch oordeel, de cognitie, (instrumentele) activiteiten van het dagelijks leven (I)ADL en gedragsveranderingen.
Naast Diagnostiek van symptomen, kan het nuttig zijn zorgzwaarte, ervaren (emotionele) belasting van de mantelzorg en kwaliteit van leven te beoordelen.
De Neuropsychiatric Inventory biedt een uitgebreide kijk op gedragsveranderingen bij dementie.
