Kernpunten

  • Overmatig alcoholgebruik kan leiden tot ernstige cognitieve stoornissen en cerebrale atrofie.
  • De cognitieve stoornissen bij overmatig alcoholgebruik zijn vaak multifactorieel bepaald.
  • Het bestaan van een ‘alcoholgerelateerde dementie’ is discutabel, omdat niet duidelijk is of de dementie puur door het toxische effect van alcohol ontstaat.
  • Na volledig staken van het alcoholgebruik kan, mogelijk zelfs nog tot na een jaar, herstel optreden van cognitieve stoornissen en cerebrale atrofie.
  • Bij patiënten die verdacht worden van overmatig alcoholgebruik is thiaminesuppletie het advies, ongeacht de thiaminespiegel in het serum.
