Overmatig alcoholgebruik kan leiden tot ernstige cognitieve stoornissen en cerebrale atrofie.
De cognitieve stoornissen bij overmatig alcoholgebruik zijn vaak multifactorieel bepaald.
Het bestaan van een ‘alcoholgerelateerde dementie’ is discutabel, omdat niet duidelijk is of de dementie puur door het toxische effect van alcohol ontstaat.
Na volledig staken van het alcoholgebruik kan, mogelijk zelfs nog tot na een jaar, herstel optreden van cognitieve stoornissen en cerebrale atrofie.
Bij patiënten die verdacht worden van overmatig alcoholgebruik is thiaminesuppletie het advies, ongeacht de thiaminespiegel in het serum.
