Samenvatting

Gingivitis en parodontitis zijn de meest voorkomende infecties van het parodontium. Gingivitis komt bij vrijwel iedereen voor, ernstige parodontitis kent een prevalentie van 10-15% bij de volwassen bevolking. Beide aandoeningen worden veroorzaakt door bacteriën die zich in de supra- en subgingivale plaque bevinden. Parodontitis is een multifactoriële ziekte, wat wil zeggen dat bacteriën een essentiële rol spelen in het ziekteproces, maar ook dat bacteriën waarschijnlijk op zichzelf niet in staat zijn om de ziekte te initiëren.
