Samenvatting

Zwakbegaafdheid is een complex begrip waar nog weinig onderzoek naar gedaan is, terwijl de prevalentie ervan aanzienlijk is. Het is geen ziekte en geen beperking, maar wel een belangrijke kwetsbaarheid die predisponerend is in het ontstaan van psychische problemen en aandacht verdient in de diagnostiek en behandeling van alle psychiatrische stoornissen. In dit hoofdstuk wordt beschreven wat onder zwakbegaafdheid wordt verstaan. Aan bod komt de DSM-classificatie, maar ook een uitgebreide beschrijving van zwakbegaafdheid inclusief cognitieve aspecten, het niveau van sociaal en emotioneel functioneren en de praktische vaardigheden. Samen dragen deze factoren bij aan het adaptieve functioneren: de mate waarin iemand in staat is zich staande te houden in zijn context. Het ontbreekt aan een heldere definiëring en afgrenzing van het begrip zwakbegaafdheid. Begripsvervaging draagt bij aan de onzichtbaarheid van deze groep patiënten, die zich juist in toenemende mate bevinden in de gezondheidszorg, de verslavingszorg en de strafrechtelijke keten.
