Zijn wij onze hersenen?

Abstract

In dit artikel worden enkele opvattingen tegen het licht gehouden die in de neurowetenschappen populair zijn geworden en die het best kunnen worden samengevat met de uitspraak: ‘Wij zijn onze hersenen.’ Er worden argumenten gegeven om de rest van het lichaam evenzeer serieus te nemen voor onze identiteit. En verder om de hersenen als een orgaan te zien waar wij gebruik van maken, net als andere organen. Ons ‘zelf’ omvat daarom meer dan ons lichaam. Wij ontwikkelen ons en dat zou niet interessant zijn als dat niet meer inhield dan het veranderen van onze hersencircuits.
