Abstract

Hart- en vaatziekten zijn een van de belangrijkste doodsoorzaken in de westerse wereld. Hypercholesterolemie is een bekende risicofactor voor het ontstaan van hart- en vaatziekten. In de jaren negentig van de vorige eeuw heeft de medicamenteuze behandeling van hypercholesterolemie door de komst van statines steeds meer aandacht gekregen. Daarnaast is er een toenemende belangstelling voor het beïnvloeden van het serumcholesterolgehalte door middel van gezonde voeding, voedingssupplementen en ‘functional foods’. Tot deze laatste categorie behoren onder andere voedingsmiddelen die verrijkt zijn met plantensterolen en -stanolen. Deze stoffen worden momenteel toegevoegd aan bepaalde margarines (Becel Pro. activ en Benecol) en zuivelproducten (onder andere yoghurtdrank).
