Zelfzorginterventies bij patiënten met diabetes mellitus type 2

Samenvatting

Meer bewegen, minder en gezonder eten, maximeren van alcohol en stoppen met roken leveren patiënten met type-2-diabetes veel gezondheidswinst op. Echter, dit soort ‘actieve’ zelfzorginterventies zijn in de praktijk nogal eens moeilijk haalbaar of moeilijk vol te houden in tegenstelling tot populaire, meer ‘passieve’ zelfzorginterventies als het slikken van chroomsupplementen. Uit de verschillende besproken studies blijkt dat er voor een viertal interventies geen bewijs bestaat aangaande hun effectiviteit, terwijl veel patiënten bereid zijn tijd, moeite en geld in dit soort ‘behandelingen’ te investeren. Er is meer onderzoek nodig van goede methodologische kwaliteit op het gebied van ‘passieve’ zelfzorginterventies. Hulpverleners zouden moet stoppen met het promoten van deze zelfzorginterventies. In plaats daarvan zouden zij actieve zelfzorg meer moeten stimuleren.
