Samenvatting

Wat maakt dat iemand zichzelf beschadigt? Hoe komt het dat dit gedrag kan ontstaan? Vaak zijn een verhoogde arousal en een overspoelend affect – of juist een dissociatieve staat – de aanleiding het eigen lichaam te beschadigen. In dit hoofdstuk wordt ingegaan op biologische en psychologische factoren die een rol hebben bij het ontstaan van het zelfbeschadigende gedrag, het overspoelende affect en dissociatie. Daarbij is er aandacht voor de ontwikkelingsfactoren en luxerende momenten. Zelfbeschadiging vindt het meest plaats in de adolescentie. Naasten en omstanders zullen op de zelfbeschadiging reageren; soms is dat (onbewust) de bedoeling, soms ook juist niet. Vanuit de hypothesen over het ontstaan van zelfbeschadigend gedrag worden de daarop aansluitende behandelinterventies beschreven.
