Op zoek naar drijvende krachten achter de ontwikkeling van gedragsproblemen

Samenvatting

De afgelopen jaren is het beloop van verschillende vormen van problematische ontwikkeling steeds beter beschreven. Van prevalente problemen zijn de meest voorkomende ontwikkelingstrajecten en belangrijke risicofactoren bekend. Veel minder duidelijk is echter waarom deze problematieken zich zo ontwikkelen als beschreven is. Wat zijn de oorzakelijke mechanismen achter problematische ontwikkeling? Bestudering van oorzakelijke verklaringen vraagt een andere benadering dan de gebruikelijke beschrijvende onderzoeken. Om oorzaken vast te stellen is een combinatie van twee typen experimenteel onderzoek noodzakelijk: om de precieze werking van oorzakelijke mechanismen te doorgronden zijn eerst series experimentele manipulaties nodig. De langetermijneffecten van daarmee gevonden oorzaken kunnen worden bestudeerd door (preventieve) interventies op deze oorzaken te richten en hun effecten vast te stellen.
