Whole body vibration als nieuwe behandeling voor cognitieve disfuncties bij ADHD?

Samenvatting

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) bij volwassenen en adolescenten is geassocieerd met uiteenlopende cognitieve beperkingen, die van invloed zijn op schoolprestaties en kwaliteit van leven. Verschillende gedragsmatige en farmaceutische behandelstrategieën zijn effectief gebleken in het verbeteren van cognitieve functies van patiënten met ADHD. De meeste behandelstrategieën zijn bij een aanzienlijk deel van de patiënten echter geassocieerd met een aantal nadelen, zoals onbevredigende resultaten van de behandeling, negatieve klinische bijwerkingen of hoge financiële kosten. Met deze beperkingen in het achterhoofd hebben we twee studies uitgevoerd, beide gericht op het toetsen van de positieve effecten van whole body vibration (WBV) als potentiële behandeling van ADHD bij volwassenen. Onmiddellijke positieve effecten van WBV-behandeling op aandachtsfuncties zijn zowel gevonden in een grote groep gezonde personen als in een groep volwassenen met de diagnose ADHD. Daarnaast zijn in een casestudie positieve langetermijneffecten van WBV-behandeling aangetoond op verschillende cognitieve maten bij een volwassen man met de diagnose ADHD.
In dit artikel worden de resultaten van onze studies besproken in het licht van de klinische relevantie van WBV-behandeling bij personen met neuropsychologische beperkingen, zoals ADHD. Voordat klinische inzetbaarheid gerealiseerd kan worden, is aanvullend onderzoek naar de langetermijneffecten van WBV op het cognitief functioneren echter noodzakelijk.
