Samenvatting

Als mensen functioneren wij met een brein dat ons helpt overleven, maar nog niet is aangepast aan onze moderne tijd. Dat brengt de nodige valkuilen met zich mee. Als artsen werken wij in een masculiene medische cultuur die van ons verwacht dat we hard werken en sterk zijn. In combinatie met nieuwe regels en onze typische dokterseigenschappen leidt dit tot toenemende werkdruk en uitval. Als vrouwen leven wij in een maatschappij die nog steeds van ons verwacht dat wij vriendelijk en verzorgend zijn. Mede door deze gendersocialisatie reageren wij anders op stress. Onze dagelijkse realiteit als vrouwelijke arts is dan ook anders dan die van onze mannelijke collega. De hoge en vaak tegenstrijdige eisen van de ‘ideale dokter’ en de ‘ideale vrouw/moeder’ met de valkuilen van het brein, zorgen voor extra stress. Het bewust zijn van deze mechanismen helpt ons er effectief, slim en veerkrachtig mee om te gaan.
