Samenvatting

Lymfoedeem ontstaat als het lymfatische systeem niet goed functioneert. De excessieve accumulatie van interstitieel vocht is het gevolg van een verstoring van de balans tussen de microvasculaire filtratie en de lymfe-afvoer. Secundair lymfoedeem ontstaat door het slecht functioneren of afwezig zijn van afvoerende lymfevaten, als gevolg van letsel. Het proteïnerijke lymfevocht, dat wordt gevormd door transmutatie uit de bloedbaan en producten van stoffen in het weefsel, draineert via capillaire vaatjes naar anatomisch herkenbare lymfevaten. De lymfe wordt in en door deze vaten gepompt door contracties van omliggende spieren en van lymfangionen in de grotere lymfevaten.
