Samenvatting

Adolescenten zijn ondernemend en gaan daarbij risico’s niet uit de weg. Dat is een van de redenen dat de adolescentie in de media en door ouders, maar ook door wetenschappers vaak wordt beschreven als een moeilijke periode, een leeftijdsfase van rebellie, chaos en conflict. Daarnaast bestaat het beeld dat de adolescentie de vormende periode in het leven is. De leeftijdsfase waarin jonge mensen uitvinden wie ze zijn en stabiel gedrag, voorkeuren en duidelijke ideeën over de maatschappij ontwikkelen. Voor beide visies op de adolescentie bestaat empirisch bewijs. De vraag is welke visie het overtuigendst is. Om dat te bepalen moeten we naar de ontwikkeling van adolescenten kijken, en dat doen we in dit boek. De adolescentie is tegenwoordig een lange ontwikkelingsfase; ze loopt van 12 tot 23 jaar en kent 4 subfasen: de vroege adolescentie (12–14 jaar), de middenadolescentie, (15–17 jaar), de late adolescentie (18–20 jaar) en de postadolescentie (21–23 jaar).
