7 Vrouwen en hart- en vaatziekten: de overgang

Samenvatting

Omdat vrouwen relatief beschermd zijn door hun hormonale status in de vruchtbare levensfase treden cardiovasculaire ziekten (CVZ) bij hen gemiddeld 7-10 jaar later op dan bij mannen. In de jaren na de menopauze wordt het cardiovasculaire risicoprofiel ongunstiger, waardoor vrouwen een inhaalslag maken. Terwijl mannen een hogere sterfte hebben aan myocardinfarcten, overlijden jaarlijks meer vrouwen aan hartfalen en CVA’s (Figuur 7.1). De afgelopen twee decennia is zowel het aantal myocardinfarcten als het aantal CVA’s bij vrouwen op middelbare leeftijd toegenomen. Door een minder gezonde leefstijl en toename in gewicht ontwikkelen veel vrouwen diabetes en hypertensie. Daarnaast zijn vooral jonge vrouwen meer gaan roken.
