Samenvatting

Afwijkend mondgedrag kan, maar hoeft niet per se schadelijke gevolgen hebben. In een afwijkende vorm kan afwijkend mondgedrag aanwezig zijn dat niet leidt tot andere orale afwijkingen. De belangrijkste negatieve gevolgen van afwijkend mondgedrag liggen op het vlak van de gezondheid, de functie van de mondorganen en vormveranderingen. Bij een normale ontwikkeling houden verschillende mondstructuren (kaak, tong en lippen) elkaar in evenwicht. Door afwijkende mondgewoonten kan dit evenwicht echter worden doorbroken met als gevolg duidelijke vormveranderingen en functieafwijkingen. Deze negatieve gevolgen worden door diverse auteurs vooral bij mondademen en duim– en vingerzuigen beschreven.
