Samenvatting

Bij het ontstaan van alle ziekten spelen zowel erfelijke (genetische) factoren als omgevingsfactoren een rol. Vroeger dachten we dat ziekten puur genetisch of omgevings-gerelateerd waren maar tegenwoordig weten we beter. Er is eigenlijk altijd wel in min of meerdere mate een interactie tussen de genetica en de omgevingsfactoren. Zelfs bij ziekten waarvan we weten welk genetisch defect ten grondslag ligt aan de ziekte, zoals bijvoorbeeld bij de ziekte van Huntington, tonen studies aan dat omgevingsfactoren mogelijk meebepalen wanneer en hoe de ziekte tot uiting komt (Wexler e.a. 2004). Bij diabetes type ii (suikerziekte), is dit nog duidelijker.
