Samenvatting

Kanker leidt vaak tot gewichtsverlies, veranderingen in de lichaamssamenstelling en verlies van eetlust. Deze toestand wordt omschreven als ondervoeding, en in extreme omstandigheden als kankercachexie. Ondervoeding en kankercachexie zijn geen gemakkelijk meetbare begrippen. Bovendien bestaat verwarring over de definitie ervan. Het lijkt derhalve verstandig te proberen duidelijkheid te scheppen over de achtergrond en inhoud van deze begrippen. Dan kan gemakkelijker worden besproken hoe vaak een abnormale voedingstoestand voorkomt, met welke consequenties, en welke behandelingsmogelijkheden er zijn.
